TRAINING PROGRAMME

“Every individual in the industry needs training” this is the only way to eradicate stigma and discrimination. “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER”

1. Management Training

This is a two hour presentation delivered by Dr Mansoor that focuses on:

  • The Basic Facts on HIV/AIDS
  • HIV/AIDS and the Law
  • VCT and Treatment
  • Living positively

2. Shopsteward Training

2.1 Basic Module

This is a two day programme comprising of 6 sub-modules which aims to provide the delegates with the facts on HIV/AIDS. It aims to stop the culture of rumours so that rumours do not become fact.

2.2 Intermediate module

This is a two day programme which is based on the basic module, and also equips delegate with skills on drafting workplace policies.

3. Advanced

3.1 Train the Trainer Programme

This programme focuses on equipping delegates with the relevant skills to deliver the information to their peers in the most time efficient and cost effective manner. The training kit includes: a manual, a set of colour transparencies and a pouch with demonstration models. The delegates are trained to deliver the training in 30 minutes in the workplace and designed not to impact on production time. There are 2 phases of the Train the Trainer Programme:

  • Module One focuses on the Basic Facts, Male and Female Condom Demonstration and Legal Aspects
  • Module Two focuses on VCT, Treatment and Living positively.

3.2 Counselling Module

This is a 5 day counselling course developed by the Centre for disease control in Atlanta that is used to equip both professional and lay counsellors to provide “risk reduction” counselling within one hour.

3.3 Home Based Care Module

The Home Based Care Programme is made possible through a partnership with the Belgian Trade Union (ABVV/FGTB).The Home Based Carer is provided with an Information Toolkit and Home Based Care Toolkit.

There are 3 levels of training:

  • Phase 1 – 2 day theory, 2 day Practical
  • Phase 2 – 1 week Mentorship Programme
  • Phase 3 – Field Assessment

A Home Based Carer is only given a Certificate of Competency if they successfully complete the 3 phases of the programme.

3.4 TB – DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course)

The SACTWU AIDS Project is working in partnership with SANTA (South African Tuberculosis Association), TB Care Association and Department of Health to deliver a 3 day DOTS workshop. This course equips delegates with the relevant skills to become DOTS mentors. The TB-DOTS programme is linked to the Home Based Care Programme, in that delegates that attend this programme can attend the Home Based Care Programme.

4. Drama Club

The Drama Club consists of 4 retrenched factory workers who have been trained to be actors . By using theatre one can reinforce key HIV/AIDS messages in an easily understandable, fun and entertaining way. The performances are based on six different scripts. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to perform a script. They cover everything from prevention, HIV-testing to the rights of workers who are positive. Last year (2004) alone they performed in more than 100 companies and to more than 15 000 workers and events in KwaZulu-Natal.
