Press Release:

SACTWU welcomes DTI raids on counterfeit goods

The Southern Africa Clothing & Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) welcomes the past week’s Department of Trade & Industry led raids on counterfeit clothing, textile and leather good in Cape Town. Approximately R5m worth of counterfeit goods were confiscated during these raids. This will help to remove illegal competition from our markets. Such criminal activity causes job losses in one of the most vulnerable sectors of our economy. We call on these types of raids to be intensified in the immediate period ahead and for the perpetrators and their suppliers to be prosecuted and to be jailed, without the option of a fine,  if found guilty. Such corruption must be decisively removed from our markets and our from our society, sooner rather than later.
