A total of 64 bursars of the COSATU-affiliated Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers Union (SACTWU) have graduated in 2010, a report tabled at the union’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held from 16-18 March this year, showed.

The union has paid out R3.3m in 2010 bursary fund assistance to needy students from poor working class families.

Of the 64 graduates, 43 graduated with degrees and 21 with diplomas. The graduates include 6 accountants, 2 lawyers, 5 economists, 4 engineers, 2 medical doctors, 1 architect, 1 lab technician, 1 forensic technician, 2 nurses, 2 geologists and others.

The union is proud of this humble labour movement contribution by the lowest paid workers in the South African manufacturing industry, towards solving  our country’s scarce and critical skills.

SACTWU’s bursary fund was started in 1975 with a small solidarity weekly levy by the union’s members, to help support each other to meet the education expenses of their children.
