Press release: Immediate

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers' Union, which met from 26-28 November 2007, has resolved to support the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

As a trade whose membership is mostly women, we believe that we have a special responsibility to participate in the campaign.

Our NEC is deeply concerned about the continuing reports of horrific incidences of violence and abuse against women and children.

Specifically, the SACTWU NEC calls on all clothing, textile and leather industry workers to participate in all the activities organised for this year's campaign, to endorse COSATU's condemnation of violence and abuse against women and children, and for all our members to hold workplace meetings over the remaining days of the campaign to highlight this social problem.

We have also  highlighted this campaign at the union's World Aids Day awareness events held on 1 December 2007, in all major centers of the country.

During the week of 10 December 2007, SACTWU will distribute 80 000 stickers with a No Violence and Abuse Against Women and Children awareness message. These stickers will be distributed to clothing, textile and leather workers in all SACTWU organised workplaces during the week of 10 December 2007.

We call on all our members to make a special pledge and commitment to fight all forms of violence and abuse against women and children.
