PRESS ALERT: IMMEDIATE

The Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) will hold its annual National Bargaining Conference from 4-6 March 2011, in Durban. 

Tomorrow, 4 March 2011, the Conference will be addressed by the Minister of Labour (Minister Mildred Oliphant), the COSATU General Secretary (Zwelinzima Vavi) and the Minister of Economic Development (Minister Ebrahim Patel).

Their expected speaking times are as follows:

  • Minister of Labour (Minister Mildred Oliphant), focusing on the proposed labour law amendments: 10h00
  • COSATU General Secretary (Zwelinzima Vavi), focusing on current political, economic and organisational challenges facing the labour movement: 11h00
  • Minister of Economic Development (Minister Ebrahim Patel), focusing on the challenges of the New Growth Path: 17h00


The Conference will be attended by 200 SACTWU shop stewards and staff from all parts of the country, and is called to prepare the union and its 99 000 members for the 2011 wage negotiations in the clothing, textile, leather, footwear and related sectors.

The Conference starts at 09h00 tomorrow morning and will be held at the Marine Parade Garden Court Hotel (167 O. R. Tambo Drive, Beachfront, Durban, ph: 031 3373341). (Only the sessions where the above speakers will address the Conference are open to the media.)

A final update will be issued at 16h00 today, should any of the above speaking times change failing which the above speaking times must be taken as confirmed.
