PRESS RELEASE

The COSATU-affiliated Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) has today concluded a successful first National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for 2011, held in Cape Town from 16 -18 March. Our NEC is held thrice a year and is the highest policy making decision structure in the period between our National Congresses.

Our NEC considered and evaluated a wide range of policy issues relating to the work of our trade union. This included an update on implementation of the decisions of our last NEC held in early November last year, consideration of the union’s latest financial reports, finalisation of our 2011 budget, targets for our 2011 membership growth campaign, finalisation of our role in this year’s local government elections, a review of the union’s Save Jobs Campaign, finalisation of our collective bargaining strategy for this year’s wage negotiations, a review of membership service delivery improvement measures, a review of the union’s ICT modernisation programme, assessment of progress with the implementation of our National Congress Programme of Action, a review of our member benefits funds, targets for our 2011 HIV/Aids awareness and prevention campaign, a discussion on the proposed labour law amendments, targets for our 2011 shop stewards’ and staff training programs, a review of our SETA participation, report backs on the recently held COSATU Central Executive Committee meeting, a political report, finalisation of our 2011 gender program, a review of the union’s outreach programs (such as a assistance to improve literacy and numeracy levels among pre- and primary school learners), finalisation of the union’s 2011 Matric Winter Schools, a review of the efficiency and compliance of union constitutional structural meetings at workplace, branch, provincial and national level, and a focus on the proposed Walmart/Massmart merger currently before the Competition Tribunal.

Specific detail of selected areas of decisions will be released over the next few days.
