PRESS RELEASE: IMMEDIATE

The Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU)  Worker Health Program has performed just over 14 000 Male Medical Circumcisions (MMC) over a 9 month period, July 2011  to end March 2012, a report tabled at the union’s  National Executive Committee (NEC) held last week shows. This is a major trade union contribution to the SA National Department of Health’s (NDOH) fight in the prevention of HIV & AIDS.

SWHP’s MMC project is  funded by PEPFAR through the Centre of Disease Control (CDC) and supports NDOH in reaching their MMC target of almost 5 million circumcisions over the next five years.  It has been proven that MMC reduces the rate of female to male transmission by up to 60%, however condom usage should remain routine practice.

Currently, SWHP only offers MMC support in KZN province, but services will be rolled out to other parts of the country in the near future,  funding permitting.
