SACTWU Media update: immediate

Earlier SACTWU released a statement setting out the support for COSATU's strike action amongst clothing workers in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. This updated statement shares what is happening in the North-Eastern Free State today.

Today, clothing workers in the North-Eastern Free State are also showing strong support for COSATU's one-day strike action for decent work and improved public transport.

An important part of South Africa's clothing manufacturing industry is situated in and around Phuthaditjhaba in the North-Eastern Free State. However, almost all clothing workers in this area are paid sub-minimum wages and work under deplorable conditions. It is an area known for exploitation and sweatshops.

In what should be interpreted as a strong call for decent work, thousands of clothing workers in North-Eastern Free State are out on strike today, shutting down the industry in that area.

By 10:45 this morning, SACTWU had surveyed 21 clothing factories employing 4,100 workers in this area. The survey showed that 93% of clothing workers at these 21 factories have heeded COSATU's call to strike today.

For example, factories such as SA Cloth (with 1300 workers), Imvusa Trading (280 workers), Twilight Clothing (260 workers), Sapphire Clothing (260 workers), JJM Fashion (210 workers), Versatile Clothing (195 workers), Rib Trading (140 workers), Liuch Trading (130 workers), Desh Clothing (120 workers), Blue Bird Clothing (110 workers), and Kristel Clothing (110 workers) have completely shut down.

The survey was conducted telephonically by SACTWU Head Office staff. It measured attendance at workplaces today, and the information was supplied, in almost all cases, by factory production and/or human resource managers.

Our survey continues for other parts of the country.
