Press Release: Immediate

The Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) has settled it wage negotiations for 2018 for the General Goods and Handbags and for the Tanning leather sectors, respectively.

Increases are due retrospectively to 1st July 2018. Where increases have not yet been paid, ‘back pay’ will be implemented.

Our members in the Tanning leather sector will receive a 7.75% wage increase. Members in the General Goods and Handbags leather sector will receive an 8% wage increase.

The settlements were negotiated with our employer counterparts, the Association of South African Manufacturers of Luggage, Handbags and General Goods and the South African Tanning Employers Organisation, respectively. Negotiations took place under the auspices of the National Bargaining Council for the Leather Manufacturing Industry.

Approximately 6030 workers and their families will benefit from this settlement.

In the meantime our national wage strike in the Footwear sector has concluded its 5th day, today, jointly with the National Union of Leather and Allied Workers (NULAW).
