PRESS RELEASE
SACTWU PAYS OUT R19 MILLION IN RETIREMENT AND FUNERAL PAYOUTS TO MEMBERS
The 11th National Congress of the Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers’ Union(SACTWU) has heard that the union has paid out R19.1 million in funeral and retirement fund benefits to its members and their dependants, over the 3-year period 1 July 2007 to end June 2010, since the union’s previous Congress held in August 2007. In addition, the union administers a supplementary sick fund for its leather sector members, for which almost R600 000 in payouts were made.
Over 11 000 funeral- and almost 1 700 retirement payouts were made by the union’s 21 offices throughout the country. The amount of funeral, retirement and sick fund benefits claims processed by the organisation over the Congress’ 3-year review period (July 2007 – June 2010) was a staggering 14 177. In each instance, a claim was lodged, verified, and paid out with supporting documentation retained in each step.
SACTWU’s benefits scheme is self-administered, making it one of the few schemes not administered by an outside insurance company. It is an important component of the union’s broader social welfare program.
