IndustriALL Global Union has a position for a Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Secretary

At the end of December 2017, Fabian Nkomo will retire after a long and proud trade union career. He worked for the past five years as Regional Secretary in IndustriALL’s Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Office in Johannesburg. 

While we wish, Fabian a happy retirement and good health.


The new Regional Secretary should be able to begin work in December 2017 in order to ensure a transition period. We are therefore informing you that the process for recruiting for this post is officially open to candidates capable of fulfilling the following duties and meeting the criteria listed below:

Main duties and activities:
 

  •     Report directly to the general secretary regarding regional implementation of the IndustriALL Global Union Action Plan approved at its Congress in 2016.
  •     Consult, support and work with all affiliated unions in the region provided that they are in accordance with the Action Plan, the strategic plan for the region and the statutory requirements on affiliation fees
  •     Plan and promote the growth of IndustriALL Global Union in the region by increasing the membership of affiliated unions and recruiting new affiliates to IndustriALL Global Union;
  •     Support and assist IndustriALL Global Union’s strategic objective of strengthening
  •     independent and autonomous trade unions in the manufacturing, energy and mining sectors of Sub-Saharan Africa region;
  •     Assist affiliated trade unions to develop their capacity to recruit new members, take part in collective bargaining and form trade union networks and work with affiliated trade unions to take action and organize campaigns;
  •     Develop and manage projects to strengthen trade unions in the region, using both internal and external funding,
  •     Produce reference documents, reports and articles;
  •     Organize conferences and seminars and undertake work trips in the region as and when necessary;
  •     Lead the IndustriALL Global Union Regional Office team in Johannesburg, make sure the office is managed and administered efficiently and ensure proper management of the accounts;

    

Desired profile and qualifications:

 

  •     At least 5 years’ trade union experience, including trade union membership recruitment, strengthening, campaigning and training;
  •     A sound understanding of the region’s political and trade union situation;
  •     Knowledge of labour and trade union legislation in the region’s countries; Ability to clearly formulate and communicate IndustriALL Global Union’s objectives, policies and strategies in the region;
  •     Ability to communicate fluently and continuously with members of the Executive Board and affiliated unions in the region; this includes proficiency in English and a sound knowledge of written and spoken French. Knowledge of Portuguese would be an
  •     additional advantage.
  •     Ability and skills to manage budgets, produce financial reports and accounts and manage staff;
  •     High level of commitment, ability to take the initiative, well-organized, capacity to adapt, reliable;
  •     Information technology: Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer), Skype and use of social networks;
  •     Ability to work in an international work environment.
